17-20 years
Marine engine superintendents plan and direct maintenance and repair activities of marine engine mechanics on ships or at repair centers. They determine personnel, equipment, and material needs. They organize training, long-range maintenance and safety programs. Superintendents also review and update requirements for watchstanding qualifications.
Engine Room Supervisor
8-9 years
Engine room supervisors oversee the maintenance and repair of engines and shipboard mechanical equipment. They prepare reports on machinery repairs and performance and adjust work assignments for personnel development. Supervisors give technical advice and lead an engine room watch.
Marine Engine Mechanic
4-5 years
Mechanics perform complicated engine repairs and help apprentice mechanics. They clean, inspect, and repair mechanical and hydraulic devices, and perform engine checks. They also instruct mechanics in operational procedures and damage control.
Apprentice Marine Engine Mechanic
Apprentice mechanics perform basic maintenance and repair. They inspect and repair engine parts and verify clearances between parts, using gauges and micrometers. Apprentices also study blueprints and drawings to trace, locate, and inspect parts and systems.
